About Me

I love to design and build websites, mobile apps, & user interfaces for small businesses and startups.

I am a Boston-based, award-winning designer with over 15 years of experience and a passion for creating beautiful products. I especially enjoy editorial design, user interface design, and large immersive projects.

Perhaps a little unusual, but I enjoy a mix of both the highly creative “artistic” aspects of design and the technical, geeky, logic-challenging concepts of development. I find it extremely satisfying to jump back and forth between those two worlds and help to blend them together.

I believe that for digital products designers must push themselves to be great at both design and coding because both are intrinsically linked and interwoven. I find that when I work on a project those two areas overlap. In early design and wireframe phases, I will be considering logic, functionality, data storage and manipulation ideas. Later when deep into development, the design process continues as well. It just moves from visual editors to code editors, from arranging pixels to defining how pixels look, behave, and adapt. What I find amazing is that intersection of design and development that is where beautiful products are created.

After a day of design, development, or client meetings, I enjoy spending time with my family. I plop my daughter on the counter to help me cook dinner and learn about vegetables, knife cuts, or just let her stir something. On the weekends I enjoy side projects, dinner parties, board game nights with friends, or just a bowl of popcorn and reruns of Star Trek.

Experience

I have a confession to make. My first website had animated gifs and an address at Geocities. A lot of animated gifs. Probably a couple of under construction gifs as well. Thankfully those days are gone, but I have been designing for the web since the pre-dot com days of the late 90’s. Through those years I have garnered a wide range of experience including mobile app design, responsive design, kiosk & digital signage, and of course, large interactive & immersive experiences.

My work has touched many industries including higher education, hospitality, luxury lifestyle websites (think country clubs and such), news and editorial design, law websites, and startups or web apps. My start began with building tiny web sites for small business in the 90’s for people that were just starting to pay attention to this “new internet thing,” and I haven’t stopped since. My work has taken me to a few areas of the country and I've worked for companies and startups around the country including New York, Louisiana, California, Tennessee, and Boston.

Currently

For about the last 5 years I have been at Boston University, as part of the award-winning Interactive Design team. Most recently my role has been leading part of the 20-person team as an Associate Creative Director. My time is split between working on key strategic design & development projects for the university, creative direction of projects our talented designers are working on, and mentorship and leadership within the team. I’m heavily involved now in many of the process, business, and resource management aspects of running the department. I try my best to create and encourage a collaborative team environment where designers and developers are encouraged to learn and improve together.
